DarkReading: P2P Applications And The Top 5 Ways Hackers Target SMB
Randy George of DarkReading published an expert from a new report recently posted called “SMBs in the Crosshairs: Understanding the Threats, Defending the Business,”. This expert goes on to discuss the cybercrime industry and how it is quickly turning into a trillion dollar endeavor. Small Businesses tend to be a bit behind on security measures due to resources, money, experience, etc and are turning into a hotspot for cybercrime activity. The article then references the top 5 ways that attackers successfully target these businesses and what can be done to protect yourself, and wouldn’t you know it… our favorite topic, P2P File Sharing, makes its way to #1 on their list. Here is what was written about P2P Applications:
“P2P applications. If your usage policy allows for the downloading of Morpheus, Kaaza or any other peer-to-peer application, then you might as well just shut down your firewall now and give all of your users a static IP address on the Internet. A leading concern for malware developers is distribution, and P2P networks are a great way to get your hack out there. Any P2P application worth its salt is firewall friendly and can easily piggyback over the HTTP protocol in an effort to circumvent your firewall policy.”
Not surprising here… we talk about the dangers of P2P File Sharing all the time on this site. Peer2Peer Terminator by MaaS360 is a perfect solution for these small businesses that do not have the money to invest in expensive appliances to block this traffic. Simply put this free application on your devices and set up Windows Scheduler to run the termination command on a regular basis. This will ensure that any P2P File Sharing applications that are running will be terminated immediately. Check out our FAQs for more information on how to set up command line usage of this free tool. You can download the tool using the simple form to the right of this page.
