Blackmail Virus – Holding Your Data Ransom

The Kenzero Virus seems to be making its rounds again…

KAIT 8 in Jonesboro, AR is reporting that Millennium 3 is seeing an uptick in PCs heading to repair shops due to this dangerous ransomware.  It has been reported that the computers were infected after downloading the virus from P2P File Sharing networks… often times after downloading movies or music.

The Kenzero Virus first made an appearance back in April.  Corey Lemieux of Millennium 3 sated, “Basically a blackmail type of ransomware that wants to hold your personal information hostage and then have you pay for it,”.

This is another example of how viruses use P2P File Sharing networks to infect your computer.  This case is a bit extreme, given that this virus holds your personal data ransom, but only goes to show the need for terminating P2P File Sharing software that is running on your home PC using a tool like Peer2Peer Terminator by MaaS360.  I actually helped my neighbor remove a stubborn piece of ransomware last week… these are difficult to track down and get rid of.  Luckily, the virus was not near as bad as Kenzero but the headache remained.  The best advice is to avoid infection in the first place.  Know what you are downloading and avoid P2P File Sharing applications.  Run Peer2Peer Terminator on your PC today to ensure no file sharing software exists.
